I began designing my sophomore year and quickly fell in love. Self-taught on Adobe InDesign, my goal has always been to build pages that are both organized and graphically interesting.

My senior year as editor-in-chief, I have taken on the role of designing the majority of The Herald. I have built many templates and embedded a structured system to make the pages exciting yet consistent.

Covers

I styled and designed both covers for The Herald during the first semester of my senior year. I wanted them to draw students in through engaging photos with bold colors.

Game On!

I designed the sports section of this issue of The Herald to have big cutouts of players, large photos and I used text wrap. Each story was brief, so I thought it was necessary to complement them with captivating photos and graphics.

Side Out

When designing this feature, I thought a pair of crutches forming a big X would be both graphically interesting, but also tie into the story. I made sure to have a big headline and good pull quotes. I was able to use pictures of all of the people I included in my story and made sure they were large and visible.

Is Our Education too Focused on College Prep?

For this op-ed, I was able to find a good photo to make big and one that I could embed in the story as well.

Your Vote Is Your Voice

For this feature, I wanted the design to really stand out. It took me a lot of drafting and trial and error to come to this idea: having a huge, blown-up "I Voted" sticker that would take up a whole page. This really tied into what my story was about and also tied in with the cover of the issue. For the second spread, I repeated some of the images I used on the cover but in a fresh way. For the two students I talked to, I put their pictures in circles to tie in with the shape of the voting stickers and buttons.

A Passion for Choir/Senior's Dedication Shines

I wanted to design these two profiles so they had big pictures, but had slightly different layouts to make the spread more separated while still keeping continuity.

Guts, Grit, and Glory

For this sports feature, I had a dominant photo and an action shot build the spread. I also made a sidebar that I colored blue to add a pop of color to the page.
